Incredible Hulk 3

Banished to Outer Space

In a cave in the New Mexican desert, Rick Jones maintains his nightly vigil as the Hulk pounds restlessly at his cement prison. Only a few hours ago, him and the scientist Bruce Banner had to dash to the cave with the sun setting which triggers Bruce's monstrous transformation. Believe the Hulk is secure, Rick takes off through the desert in search of some rest. Before he can reach a destination, a group of soldiers stop him and explain they are under orders of General Ross to bring Rick with them. He thinks Rick Jones can lead them to the Hulk.

At General Ross's headquarters, the General is addressing his team. He plans to implement "Plan H" using Rick Jones's help. As soon as the teenager arrives, General Ross tells the lad that he wants him to get the Hulk in order to help them test out a new rocket. Only the Hulk can withstand the force of it's G-pull. Rick acquiesces, buying Ross's line that it's for the good of the country. After heading back to the cave, Rick starts to release Hulk from his prison when suddenly the green monster breaks free.

Hulk chases Rick through the desert. Having recognized him as the boy who imprisoned him, Hulk follows the teen unaware that he is bait for General Ross's plan. Now at the rocket site, Rick climbs up the launch tower and lures Hulk up to the rocket's cabin. Once Hulk is inside, Ross quickly shuts the door of the rocket on the green behemoth. With Hulk trapped, they launch the rocket straight into space. General Ross announces that this is the end of the Hulk!

Inside the rocket, the Hulk changes back to Bruce Banner. Almost immediately, the spacecraft enters a belt of powerful rays (possibly the same cosmic rays that created the Fantastic Four a few months ago.) which pass through the unshielded craft. After Banner is bombarded with these rays of immense power, the capsule breaks free to continue its journey through space. Back on earth Rick Jones contemplates if what he did was good or not. Rick overhears General Ross congratulating his men on stopping the Hulk, which makes the young man realize he was duped by the military. While the soldiers are busy, Rick sneaks over to a console and is able to send a signal to bring the capsule back to earth. As he does this, a powerful surge of energy coming all the way from the rocket zaps Rick Jones.

Fearing that Bruce Banner will be injured in the falling missile since it is day now, Rick runs out to meet him. As soon as he reaches it new fears arise as out in broad daylight emerges the incredible Hulk. And he is pissed. Spotting Rick, the Hulk hurls the wreckage of his capsule at the youth who quickly runs away. Rick is chased up a mountain of rocks by the green behemoth. Hulk corners Rick at the edge of a cliff yelling "Revenge!" and Rick shout back "stop!" So the Hulk does.

Rick realizes he can now control the Hulk. He performs a few tests commanding the Hulk around, who obeys his every word. He gets Hulk to carry him safely down the mountain, where he then leads Hulk to his nearby cabin. Once inside Rick, who has been awake since the previous day, drifts off to sleep. A few minutes later he awakes with a start. The Hulk is gone from his room. Rick quickly gets out of bed and goes searching for the green monstrosity. He follows a path of destruction to a nearby town where he witnesses the Hulk on a rampage. State troopers manage to hold him at bay when Rick quickly intervenes. He tells Hulk to get them out of there. The powerful behemoth obeys; he takes Rick into his arms and flies out of town. Miles away, Rick leads the Hulk back to his cave prison where the boy can finally try to get some rest while the Hulk is enclosed.

While Hulk is imprisoned, Rick goes over the events of the Hulk's origin(covered in Incredible Hulk #1) as he struggles to stay awake. He fears if he should fall asleep, the Hulk will break through the concrete barrier and run amok again now that he seems to be even more powerful. Lost in thought, Rick quietly maintains his vigil.

Will the Mighty Hulk be a Match for the Ringmaster

In the town of Plainville, two government agents slowly drive through the streets. Only yesterday the town was fully functioning, today it is a ramshackle. All of the citizens are in some kind of trance. Every valuable has been stolen. The town's bank vaults are all empty. And this isn't the first town to be hit like this. The only piece of evidence the FBI men can find, are posters for a travelling circus which they found in the other towns too.

In another town, we see the culprits in action. The circus of crime, lead by their boss The Ringmaster, perform inside of a packed tent. The Ringmaster performs his key act; he uses his special hypnotic hat and his voice to carefully hypnotize the entire audience at once. As they are under his thrall, the other performers quickly go through the crowd's belongings, procuring anything of value. Then the whole troupe goes throughout the town, hypnotizing the few citizens not in attendance at the circus and steal all of their belongings. They load up their caravan with the loot and head towards the next small town.

Back at the Hulk's cave, Rick Jones has managed to stay up all night again. Commanding Hulk to stay in stasis, Rick goes a nearby town where his Aunt Polly lives. While he is washing up in her house we learn that he, like Peter Parker, is an orphan with a doting elderly aunt. After Rick eats he heads outside to find something to do. He spots a poster for a circus that is in town and decides to take in the show.

Inside the circus tent, the show begins. The Ringmaster starts performing his hypnotizing trick. As Rick starts to feel the trance coming over him, he attempts to use his mental connection to the Hulk and it works. The Hulk is summoned to the circus, who immediately causes chaos, smashing through the tent and hitting the performers. Ringmaster quickly orders his men to blast the pressurized fire hose at the green Goliath. Successfully subduing the Hulk, they drop a net around him and then bound him up in extremely heavy chains. The Hulk, who cannot move without the entranced Rick Jones's command, is now their new attraction.

A day later and another town, the Ringmaster starts to perform his trick again. Before he can finish, the two FBI agents along with Rick Jones show up. They were able to snap the audience out of their trance and are here to stop the criminals. When Rick utters that the Hulk is a live bomb, something in the Hulk snaps and he starts destroying everything. He clobbers an elephant, sending circus men sprawling everywhere. The Ringmaster attempts to flee, but Hulk snatches him out of his chariot and is ready to pulverize him. Only Rick's words interfere again. He gets Hulk to stop the chaos just in time for soldiers to pour in. Hulk takes Rick in his arms and flies off yet again. General Ross raises his fist to the sky...

Notes:

From here own Bruce Banner can now turn into the Hulk during the day. He can also fly. This power doesn't last for very long thankfully.

No Betty and very little Bruce Banner in this issue. Rick is largely the main character for this issue, which could be interesting but this story really doesn't do much for him. He's just trying to seek some sleep.

Here we have the introduction of silver age mainstay, the Ringmaster and his Circus of Crime. They will pop up in various places throughout the early years of Marvel. Their introduction isn't the strongest, but they will contribute to better told stories in the future. This one is kind of a mess.

Journey into Mystery 84

The Mighty Thor vs. The Executioner

Doctor Donald Blake has returned to the States after his eventful vacation in Norway. Back home he runs a successful medical practice as a physician. Along with his pretty, young, nurse Jane Foster, they help treat many patients. Blake has developed feelings for Jane, but fears expressing them for his shortcoming of having a bad leg. Jane is attracted to him as well, but sees him as only being a stuffy doctor who has no time for her.

As the two of them end their day, Don drives Jane through the city when they hear a newsboy shouting the latest extra. Jane informs Blake that while he was on vacation, a revolution has broken out in the South American country of San Diablo. A Pro-Communist faction lead by a warlord dubbed "The Executioner" has taken over from the democratic faction. The Executioner has been given the name due to his extreme treatment of having anyone who fails him put before a firing squad. One week later, the US sends out a mercy ship to the region full of medical supplies. Among many others, Don Blake and Jane Foster volunteer to join this ship.

While the ship nears San Diablo, Don Blake expresses his concern of bringing Jane along. After Jane talks some sense into him, Blake's worries become true as a fleet of communist jets threaten the ship from above. Upon witnessing this, Don quickly hides away so he can stamp his cane and unleash the might of Thor. As the ship's passengers look on, the thunder god meets the enemy head on. With his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, Thor cleaves one jet in two. He turns around and spins his hammer so fast it creates an air pocket, shoving the rest of the fleet down to the ocean waters below. With the jets downed, Thor himself plunges into the ocean where he turns back into Don Blake. Floating to the surface, the lame doctor is rescued by his fellow travelers. He claims he slipped overboard in the confusion of everything in order to protect his secret.

In San Diablo, word has gotten back to The Executioner that his mission to destroy the mercy ship failed. Outraged, he sends the commander who was in charge of them straight to the firing squad to be executed. He then gets word that the Americans have landed, sending his soldiers out to confront them. They quickly ambush the doctors out on a road. Don Blake manages to hide again. He stamps his cane down twice to create a giant storm localized in the area. The massive winds blind the soldiers and the heavy rain turns the ground into mud, tripping the soldiers down a huge mudslide. With the Americans safe from the soldiers, Don stamps the storm out with his cane. Just in time to see three tanks headed their way.

Don Blake quickly changes into Thor. He grabs a large tree trunk from out of the ground to fight off the tanks. Thrusting it under the tank treads, he uses the tree as a lever to flip the tank over, tossing it upside down on the preceding tank. Destroying the both of them. The third tank is hit so hard with Thor's hammer, it shatters the molecules of the steel with intense vibrations. As Thor turns, he is confronted by three of the commie soldiers who have taken Jane Foster captive.

Not wanting to risk Jane's life, Thor watches as the commie soldiers take her to The Executioner's base, where the Executioner takes a liking to the nurse. After changing back to Don Blake, he is caught by the Executioner's men. He is sent to the firing wall where the Executioner snatches Don's cane. The Executioner makes a deal, if Jane agrees to marry him he will spare the doctor. As she agrees, Don calls out the Executioner for being a coward. The warlord goes to strike Don with his cane, giving Don a chance to reach out, grab the cane, and in a blinding flash turn into Thor.

With hammer in hand, Thor defeats the Communists. He hurls Mjolnir into a tent so when the weapon comes back to him the large tarp covers and confuses the soldiers that are ordered to attack him. Just then the cavalry arrives; the Democratic faction rush in. With the communist soldiers unprepared, they run towards a nearby mountain. However, Thor uses his power over lightning to splinter the top of the mountain open, causing a river of lava to block their path. The Communists surrender to the Democratic faction.

Back at the base, the Executioner attempts to flee with all of the money they have. His own men see this act of betrayal and gun him down in front of the firing wall for his failure. Jane Foster is rescued by the Democratic soldiers as they round up the Communists. Awhile later as Jane & Don finish their service, Jane questions where Don was during the big battle with Thor. Don tells her he was hiding on the other side of the wall. Jane silently wishes Don could be more brave like that handsome Thor.

Notes:

Dr. Don Blake is a physician who has his own practice in New York. He has a nurse, Jane Foster, who he's attracted to and she cares for him, but neither know it.

In Marvel's South America there is a country called San Diablo.

Journey into Mystery 83

The Stonemen from Saturn!

In Norway an American doctor with a bad leg and a cane named Donald Blake is on vacation. While admiring the beautiful countryside, he fails to notice a red UFO landing in the distance behind him. As he heads back to town, the spacecraft opens and some strange Stonemen emerge, looking like a mix between the Thing and the Maoi statues of Easter Island. They run some tests to prove they are stronger in this atmosphere compared to their own on Saturn. An old man spies the beings as they then test out their ray guns. With success they then declare their plan to conquer the planet.

The old man races back undetected to a nearby village. He warns the townspeople of what he saw, but nobody believes him. Except for Don Blake. He goes to investigate. Following some odd footprints, Blake quickly discovers the stone aliens and they quickly become aware of him!

Stumbling over a branch, Don Blake accidentally snaps it loud enough to reach the aliens's ears. The Stone Men chase the lame doctor up a hill. He trips over a rock and loses his cane to the ground. Crawling up the gravel, Blake discovers a cave to hide in. He tries to find another exit, but a boulder blocks his path. With no way out, Donald Blake quickly sinks into despair.

In his desperation, Blake accidentally triggers a lever on the cave wall. It activates a door in the wall that reveals a secret chamber within. Don goes inside where he finds an ancient cane lying on it's side on a raised part of the ground where sunlight can hit it. Don picks it up and decides he'll use it to pry that boulder out of the way.

As Don prepares to move the boulder, he whacks the cane against the stone when with a flash of lightning he and the cane have transformed. No longer stands the weak, lame doctor. In his stead stands the power and strength of the gold-tressed Norse thunder god, the mighty Thor. In his hand his enchanted hammer Mjolnir takes the place of the cane with it's inscription...

Now as the god Thor, he is able to lift the boulder blocking his exit. Outside he tests his skills and abilities. If he lets go of the hammer for more than 60 seconds, he reverts back to Don Blake. Whenever he throws his hammer it will always come back to him. He can split trees in half with it. If he taps the ground twice, he summons a mighty storm. If he taps it 3 times, the storm ends. And if he taps it just once he turns back into Don Blake. He vows to use this power to get rid of the Stone Men.

At a nearby NATO air base, an incoming fleet is being monitored. They send out a unit to deal with the threat, who is then quickly dispatched by the Stone Men's advanced technology. They can make 3D illusions, such as a giant dragon appearing in the sky as if it were real. The NATO military fires rockets at the spacecrafts, but they are all deflected by their powerful force fields. Witnessing all of this, Don changes into Thor who swings his hammer around to fly off and meet the enemy head on.

Thor lands in the middle of a field surrounded by Stone Men. He bats them all back, encircling himself with Mjolnir. They bring a steel cage down on the thunder god, but Thor is stronger than steel bars. When Thor knocks all of their weapons out of their hand, the Stone Men summon a giant robot called the Mechano-Monster. One powerful blow of Mjolnir annihilates the robot.

With the Mechano-Monster's defeat, the Stone Men lose all hope. They race back to their ships and depart Earth, back to where they came from. As the NATO soldiers close in, Thor decides to change back to Don Blake. He doesn't want their curiosity to expose any of his secrets. All that the NATO men can see when they reach the location is a man with a limp and a cane wandering off. But he couldn't possibly have anything to do with the events that transpired.

Notes:

Now we welcome Thor to the roster of Marvel characters. This universe is quickly becoming packed and we're only halfway through 1962. Now that we've learned about Thor and what he can do, next time we'll learn a bit more about who Don Blake is as he heads back home to the States.

Amazing Fantasy 15

Spider-Man!

Elsewhere in Midtown Manhattan, a teenager named Peter Parker is rejected by his classmates for being a science geek. They almost invite him to a dance, but decide against it. Peter is an orphan who grew up by his elderly aunt May Parker and her husband Ben Parker. They both love their nephew dearly, encouraging his academic achievements. Something his fellow students are less than stellar about, making Peter Parker an outcast.

On one particular day, Peter goes to a science exhibit after school involving radiation by himself. There is a demonstration involving radiation rays. Unseen by everyone, a tiny spider descends from the ceiling into the ray, soaking up the radiation. The spider finds its way onto Peter's hand and bites.

Peter feels strange. He leaves the exhibit to clear his head, when he is nearly run over by a speeding car. Leaping out of harm's way, Peter finds himself stuck on the side of a building. He climbs the building up to the roof where he manages to crush a steel pipe with his bare hands. Then he is able to easily descend back down by a thin cable.

On his way back home, Peter sees a competition at a local gym. Anyone who can defeat Crusher Hogan wins $100. Peter goes home to make a disguise for himself and returns to test his new skills and win the $100 prize. The masked Peter quickly makes a mockery of Crusher Hogan, which is witnessed by a TV Producer. After Peter wins the money, the producer pulls him aside to offer a spot on the Ed Sullivan show.

Sometime after Peter returns home, he starts designing a more showy costume. He invents his web-shooters, these mechanical devices that go around his wrists so he can shoot out sticky web fluid paste that he also invented. Now in his classic red and black webbing outfit he comes up with his stage name, Spider-Man.

Spider-Man Appears. At his first show, he crawls around on the walls, shoots candles out with his webbing and swings around a lot. As the show ends he walks into a crime in progress. The criminal runs right past him with a cop chasing behind. Spider-Man just stands there and watches the crook escape in an elevator. The cop stops his pursuit and chews Spider-Man out for not helping. Spider-Man who has had enough of people telling him what to responds, "Sorry pal! That's your job!" When Peter returns home, his aunt and uncle gift him with a brand new microscope just for being a good person.

As the days follow, Spider-Man has become very famous, catching the eye of every newspaper. One night, after another appearance of Spider-Man, Peter sees a cop car in front of his house. An officer explains to the young man that a burglar broke in and shot his uncle Ben. They have the murderer surrounded in an old warehouse, but it's too dangerous for them to go inside. Shaking off the tears, Peter dons his Spider-Man costume and goes after the criminal.

Finding the old warehouse Spider-Man sneaks inside. Leaping from the shadows, Spider-Man confronts the burglar and uses his webbing to dispose of the gun. Spider-Man punches the burglar off his feet. He gets a closer look. It's the man who ran past him before. The criminal he could have just tripped, but chose not to. He webs the burglar up and sends him down to the police. Peter walks home in the dark as tears stream down his face, blaming himself for his uncle's tragic death at the hands of this burglar; if he hadn't been so careless. Learning that in this world, with great power, comes great responsibility.

Notes:

So here is Spider-Man with our heaviest origin story yet! Everybody knows Spider-Man's origin yet if you sit down to read it in detail the emotions still hit harder than any story we've had up to date. A lot of it has to do with Ditko's beautiful dark, moody lighting Then Stan Lee breaks the darkness with his levity in the narration, something we'll be seeing a great deal more of, a bit in excess at some places. It works here to balance this very dark tale.

Fantastic Four 5

Prisoners of Doctor Doom!
by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby

"Fantastic Four!!! Heed my words! This is Doctor Doom!!" -Doctor Doom

In a castle far away from New York, a man in an iron suit and dark green tunic vows to defeat the Fantastic Four and make them his pawns. He then takes off in a sharkcopter to their headquarters.
The Fantastic Four are battling among themselves inside the Baxter Building. Johnny Storm is reading the first issue of Incredible Hulk. When he points out how the Hulk remind him of the Thing, Thing naturally loses his temper and snatches the comic. Johnny responds by igniting his hand and burning the comic as well as Thing. Reed and Sue manage to calm their quarrel when suddenly the lights go out. An asbestos net drops over the building and the man in the sharkcopter announces his presence, "Fantastic Four!!! Heed my words! This is Doctor Doom!!"

Reed Richards recognizes Doom's voice. When he was in college there was a student named Victor von Doom who had an interest in the occult. He also had a brilliant mind for science like Reed himself. Doom created a device against the university's wishes to attempt to contact the netherworld. He failed however and the device blew up in his face. Doom was expelled. The last Reed had heard he was in Tibet searching for more mystical secrets.

Doctor Doom calls for Sue to come out first as his hostage. Thing grabs for the net, but is immediately electrocuted. Sue complies and once on board Doctor Doom's sharkcopter, the rest of the group follow. Doom imprisons them in a cage dangling from the copter and carries them all back to his castle. Once they are inside the castle, Johnny, Thing and Reed stand before Doom in his throne as he has Sue off to the side. His pet tiger glaring at all of them. Doom explains that he has invented a time machine. He wants the three of them to go back to pirate times and steal Blackbeard's treasure for him. He must remain behind to man the time machine and he's keeping Sue hostage to insure their success. With Doom pressing a button, the three men vanish from the platform they are standing on.

The male members of the FF have 48 hours to find and procure Blackbeard's treasure. They stumble upon two pirates arguing over a bundle of clothes. Thing rushes out to scare them off and Johnny and Reed go through the clothes so they can look the part. Once they have disguised themselves, they make way to the nearest bar to make a plan. As they do, some other pirates drug their drinks and shanghai them back to their ship.

Some hours later Thing awakes in the cabin of a ship headed out to sea. He bursts up through the floorboards of the deck and starts battling everyone on board. Reed and Johnny are roused by the commotion and quickly join their partner. Suddenly another ship loaded with loot starts firing cannons at them. They presume it may be Blackbeard and the Torch flames on to take on the attacking ship.

The Fantastic Four confront Blackbeard. While the Torch assaults the enemy ship, Mr. Fantastic stretches between the two vessels, creating a bridge for the pirates to march across. Thing tears off the mast and leads the pirates in their attack. With the foes defeated, the pirates declare Thing their leader, Blackbeard. While this is going on, Reed and Johnny have found a treasure chest and since the ship now belongs to "Blackbeard" it's just what they need. However, Reed replaces the jewels in the chest with a chain to fool Doom. Thing then announces that he is going to stay behind where he is accepted among people.

When Reed and Johnny protest, Thing gets his men to wrap them up in sails and forces them onto a lifeboat. Just then a storm hits them out of nowhere, completely demolishing the ship. They all wash ashore on a deserted island with the treasure chest, just in time for Doctor Doom's time machine to finish it's 48 hour circuit and pull the three men back to the modern day of 1962. After Doom welcomes them back, he seizes the treasure chest while explaining that the jewels inside have mystical properties for they once belonged to the ancient sorcerer Merlin. Outraged at finding only the chains, Doom attacks them. Thing clobbers Doom, but the figure explodes for it was only a robot. From the ceiling a surveillance orb descends and the real Doom locks them inside a chamber that he is quickly robbing of oxygen.

Doctor Doom is so engrossed with the three men, he forgets all about Sue. She quickly turns invisible and manages to short circuit the chamber computer so that it blows up right in Doom's face. The Invisible Girl races to the chamber before her partners suffocate. She hits a button to lift the door to the chamber. Reed unties her still bound wrists and the four of them are finally back together. Stretching out of a barred window, Reed ties himself around the bars and grabs onto a boulder across the castle's moat. He tenses himself to the point where the castle wall gives way and the other three can escape. Human Torch tries a new trick where he burns at an atomic intensity so that he can make the moat water solidify so his sister and Thing can cross without worrying about the crocodiles.

With the Four escaped, the Torch encircles the castle with his flame in order to smoke out Doctor Doom. Doctor Doom uses a jet pack to fly out of his castle. Johnny gives chase, but his flame quickly dies down from all the previous activity and like Sub-Mariner before, Doctor Doom escapes.

Notes:

Reed Richards shows that he's not just scientifically smart, but he can outwit his opponents too. We also learn a bit about his history, that he went to college. The same college as Doctor Doom. That they are peers.

Sue Storm show yet again how capable she is. She is the only one of the entire team to actually hurt the real Doom when she blows that computer up in his face and then she saves everyone. She is relegated yet again as the hostage as she was in the last couple stories.

Johnny Storm doesn't have a whole lot to do in this story. His fighting and bickering with Thing has gotten a tad tamer and more lighthearted. He is reading a copy of Incredible Hulk #1, which we'll later learn that Marvel Comics are indeed published within the Marvel Universe.

The Thing is still feeling incredibly lonely and alienated. He goes so far as to wanting to stay behind during pirate times where he is accepted, he casts the friends he does have away.

Doctor Doom's desire for Merlin's jewels seems a little inconsistent with him. My head-cannon for this is that Doom merely wanted to test his time machine, but in case it didn't work right he used the FF as his guinea pigs. The castle he is in in this issue is not in Latveria, it's supposed to be in upper New York somewhere.

Notes:

After the jewels are lost at sea, Johnny worries if the Sub-Mariner should one day get them. As far as I know nothing has ever come of this and it's just a reminder that Sub-Mariner is still a threat to the group.

This is the first introduction of both magic and time travel in the Marvel Universe. Both things which become very significant as the world continues to expand.
