Journey into Mystery 84

The Mighty Thor vs. The Executioner

Doctor Donald Blake has returned to the States after his eventful vacation in Norway. Back home he runs a successful medical practice as a physician. Along with his pretty, young, nurse Jane Foster, they help treat many patients. Blake has developed feelings for Jane, but fears expressing them for his shortcoming of having a bad leg. Jane is attracted to him as well, but sees him as only being a stuffy doctor who has no time for her.

As the two of them end their day, Don drives Jane through the city when they hear a newsboy shouting the latest extra. Jane informs Blake that while he was on vacation, a revolution has broken out in the South American country of San Diablo. A Pro-Communist faction lead by a warlord dubbed "The Executioner" has taken over from the democratic faction. The Executioner has been given the name due to his extreme treatment of having anyone who fails him put before a firing squad. One week later, the US sends out a mercy ship to the region full of medical supplies. Among many others, Don Blake and Jane Foster volunteer to join this ship.

While the ship nears San Diablo, Don Blake expresses his concern of bringing Jane along. After Jane talks some sense into him, Blake's worries become true as a fleet of communist jets threaten the ship from above. Upon witnessing this, Don quickly hides away so he can stamp his cane and unleash the might of Thor. As the ship's passengers look on, the thunder god meets the enemy head on. With his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, Thor cleaves one jet in two. He turns around and spins his hammer so fast it creates an air pocket, shoving the rest of the fleet down to the ocean waters below. With the jets downed, Thor himself plunges into the ocean where he turns back into Don Blake. Floating to the surface, the lame doctor is rescued by his fellow travelers. He claims he slipped overboard in the confusion of everything in order to protect his secret.

In San Diablo, word has gotten back to The Executioner that his mission to destroy the mercy ship failed. Outraged, he sends the commander who was in charge of them straight to the firing squad to be executed. He then gets word that the Americans have landed, sending his soldiers out to confront them. They quickly ambush the doctors out on a road. Don Blake manages to hide again. He stamps his cane down twice to create a giant storm localized in the area. The massive winds blind the soldiers and the heavy rain turns the ground into mud, tripping the soldiers down a huge mudslide. With the Americans safe from the soldiers, Don stamps the storm out with his cane. Just in time to see three tanks headed their way.

Don Blake quickly changes into Thor. He grabs a large tree trunk from out of the ground to fight off the tanks. Thrusting it under the tank treads, he uses the tree as a lever to flip the tank over, tossing it upside down on the preceding tank. Destroying the both of them. The third tank is hit so hard with Thor's hammer, it shatters the molecules of the steel with intense vibrations. As Thor turns, he is confronted by three of the commie soldiers who have taken Jane Foster captive.

Not wanting to risk Jane's life, Thor watches as the commie soldiers take her to The Executioner's base, where the Executioner takes a liking to the nurse. After changing back to Don Blake, he is caught by the Executioner's men. He is sent to the firing wall where the Executioner snatches Don's cane. The Executioner makes a deal, if Jane agrees to marry him he will spare the doctor. As she agrees, Don calls out the Executioner for being a coward. The warlord goes to strike Don with his cane, giving Don a chance to reach out, grab the cane, and in a blinding flash turn into Thor.

With hammer in hand, Thor defeats the Communists. He hurls Mjolnir into a tent so when the weapon comes back to him the large tarp covers and confuses the soldiers that are ordered to attack him. Just then the cavalry arrives; the Democratic faction rush in. With the communist soldiers unprepared, they run towards a nearby mountain. However, Thor uses his power over lightning to splinter the top of the mountain open, causing a river of lava to block their path. The Communists surrender to the Democratic faction.

Back at the base, the Executioner attempts to flee with all of the money they have. His own men see this act of betrayal and gun him down in front of the firing wall for his failure. Jane Foster is rescued by the Democratic soldiers as they round up the Communists. Awhile later as Jane & Don finish their service, Jane questions where Don was during the big battle with Thor. Don tells her he was hiding on the other side of the wall. Jane silently wishes Don could be more brave like that handsome Thor.
